  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon purple food coloring
  • 1 pound cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar (sifted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, vanilla extract, and purple food coloring.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients until smooth. Divide the batter between the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for about 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth; gradually add confectioners' sugar until fluffy.
